Our Story
Karakol started with a daughter trying to help her mom make a smart choice.
We’re Makenzie and David, the husband-and-wife duo behind Karakol, a Canadian LED mask brand born between Hong Kong, Mexico, and Canada.
I’m Makenzie, a Canadian who spent 15 years living abroad, and my first deep dive into LED light therapy began when my mom told me she wanted to invest in an LED mask. I scoured beauty magazines and online recommendations, trying to find a mask that actually felt trustworthy for such a big-ticket purchase. Every option seemed to come with a compromise: questionable build quality, flimsy materials, uncomfortable fit, or underwhelming LED power for the price.
Life took my Mexican husband David and me to Hong Kong, where we spent eight years building a life, having our two children, and quietly dreaming about a business we could bring back home to Canada. While planning that next chapter, we took advantage of being so close to the manufacturing heart of Asia. We visited trade shows—mostly for food and beverage at first, hunting for interesting TCM superfoods and adaptogens that China is so rich in—but we kept getting pulled toward the booths showcasing emerging LED technology.
Those trips turned into factory visits in mainland China, where we could see, touch, and compare devices up close. I brought with me everything I had learned from my mom’s experience with her first mask—what she loved, what she found frustrating, what felt worth the investment and what didn’t. We met an incredible manufacturing team who shared our obsession with quality and were willing to iterate with us instead of cutting corners.
That is how Karakol was born: a husband-and-wife collaboration between a Canadian and a Mexican, now based in Ontario, building a brand that sits between entry-level masks and eye-watering clinic prices. We focus on comfortable, wearable designs, dense and purposeful LED coverage, and materials that feel good enough to live on your nightstand—not in the back of a drawer.
Today, it’s still just the two of us behind the scenes, starting small with masks while we slowly and thoughtfully expand into more light-based rituals and beauty tech. We design for people like my mom, and like us: humans who care about visible results, honest value, and products that feel as considered as the routines they become part of.
Karakol is our family’s way of bringing modern LED beauty innovation home—one light ritual at a time. We’re currently rooted in Canada, with plans to expand our shipping to the United States and Mexico so more people across North America can make LED light a calm, everyday ritual.
Much love,
Makenzie & David
